CCIMT Information
Common Carotid Intima Media Thickness (CCIMT) is typically measured by B-mode ultrasonography in the far deeper wall of common carotid artery about 1 cm proximal to carotid artery bifurcation.
Common unit of measurement is micrometers(µ)m. one millimeter = 1000 micrometers
The algorithm for calculation of vascular age from IMT is based on the model described in the following article
Engelen L, Ferreira I, Stehouwer CD, Boutouyrie P, Laurent S, Reference Values for Arterial Measurements C. Reference intervals for common carotid intima-media thickness measured with echotracking: relation with risk factors. Eur Heart J. 2013;34(30):2368-80.
In both men and women there is a linear relationship between age and IMT
Hence, in healthy sub-population aged above 15 years, the IMT (in micrometers) is estimated by the following formulas. Because of availability of mean and SD at each age point, percentiles can be estimated by applying standard formulas.
In men, mean = 323.5 + (5.201 ✕ age), SD = 57.24 + (0.9027 ✕ age)
In women, mean = 321.7 + (4.971 ✕ age), SD = 54.50 + (0.8256 ✕ age).
Disclaimer
The estimation of vascular Age should not be used for diagnosis or be used as a substitute for medical advice.
Vascular age is ideally interpreted in light of other findings on medical history, physical examination and other laboratory data.
Always consult your doctor or healthcare professional to make healthcare decisions or before starting any preventive/therapeutic management strategies.
